It was flattering, she supposed, to have these girls so anxious to see her, but troubling as well. She railed against the way she’d been raised, the seclusion, the way she was never allowed to make her own decisions, treated as an ornament instead of a person. But these girls didn’t know about any of that. They were simply ecstatic to witness the unveiling of a person Zackery had built through careful strategy, and the very seclusion she hated, into a figure of mythic proportions—larger than life. It was by design they were so enthusiastic, but that didn’t make it right.
